This embroidered patch is inspired by the McGurk Effect, a famous audio-visual illusion in neuroscience. The design features an ornate mask inside a glowing crystal ball, showing how our brains create reality when our senses do not match.
This artwork was first shown in "The Neurobiology of Language, Speech, and Music" on The Observant Mind. It is part of The Cocktail Party Problem Collection, a series that explores how people perceive, pay attention, and interpret the world in unique ways.
The crystal ball goes along with the collection's fortune teller illustration. The fortune teller says she can reveal hidden truths, but she gets distracted by a playful black cat. This leaves the viewer to notice the contradictions in the room: a candle burns but has no shadow, an hourglass looks full at both ends, a bouquet hides wilted flowers, a bird ignores its open birdhouse, a straight frame holds a crooked painting, and healthy leaves cover dying ones. Even the elegant mask hints that appearances can hide different intentions.
