The Journey of Odysseus

My intention in creating this infographic is to highlight a social concern I personally find important to address: the modern day battles men face against toxic stereotypes, expectations, and the resulting impact on their mental health.

An infographic titled 'The Journey of Odysseus, The Quest to Return Home from Toxic Stereotypes' with five stops: 1) The Hero’s Burden, 2) Masking The Pain, 3) Navigating Dangers Alone, 4) Refusing Help, 5) Sailing to Safety. Each stop describes challenges Odysseus faces related to gender stereotypes and emotional expression, illustrated with stylized images of a man, a woman, and mythical scenes, all in orange and yellow tones.

As a feminist…

A woman with dark hair and earrings turns slightly and looks at the camera with a slight smile. She is wearing a green hoodie and is in a dimly lit interior space with red lights and decorative elements.

I believe it is critical we address the wellbeing of all genders. Feminism to me isn't "Women above everything" but rather "Equality and equity should be normalized." Outdated patriarchal stereotypes of "How things should be" are not only oppressive to people who aren't cisgender white men. They affect us all and have always impacted our psychological welfare. Historically, these stereotypes were used to dismiss serious health concerns regardless of gender. Breaking these stereotypes, addressing generational trauma, and redefining what "role" means in terms of social acceptability will contribute positively to the mental and physical health of all genders. This will lead to a prosperous, more accepting, and empowered society.
